A team of researchers from MIT and NASA developed a technology that allows the implementation of high-speed wireless links between the Earth and the Moon. The installation, called Lunar Laser Communications Demonstration (LLCD), was capable of transmitting data from the Earth to the Moon (distance of almost 400 000 km) at a speed of 19.44 Mbps (uplink) and, in the opposite direction, 622 Mbps (downlink). The parameters are 4800 times better than the previous ones achieved in radio communications.

High-speed transmission over such a distance is a great challenge. The problem is not only the fading of the signal due to the large distance, but also the refraction effects caused by the atmosphere. In order to increase the chance that at least one light beam reaches the receiver, the transmitting device uses four high-power laser transmitters. They send the information encoded in pulses of infrared light. The receiver is placed on a satellite orbiting the Moon. Only one billionth Watt of the transmitted power (from the total of 40 W) reaches the receiver. However, the tiny power is sufficient to achieve a fast, error-free communication. It has been confirmed that the link has "tolerance to medium-size cloud attenuation, as well as large atmospheric-turbulence-induced signal power variations, or fading".

Such installations can also be used for communication with satellites orbiting the Earth. The developers are working on expansion of the range to a much greater distance - to Mars. Maybe, the achievement of the researchers will be a strong incentive for people willing to live (at the beginning) on the Moon. Full-HD surveillance video distributed in shared antenna system.
Residents of a newly built housing development requested access to images from selected security cameras deployed in the residential area (children's playground, parking lot). The most practical way was to use a solution distributing the surveillance video in SMATV system as another DVB-T multiplex that could be received by any television connected to the antenna system.The sensitive places are monitored by four Full-HD IP cameras Sunell SN-IPR54/14APDN K1685. The video streams from the cameras are transmitted via UTP cables to ULTIPOWER N29980 switch with PoE function. The use of the function simplifies the network and lowers the costs (no need for additional power supplies and cables). The central point of the system is four-channel IP NVR FLEX-420 K2004. The multifunction device converts the data streams from the IP CCTV cameras into HDMI signal. In the system, it has been configured so that to provide the images from the cameras in sequence, 5 seconds in full screen mode from each camera.

The HDMI signal supplied to the COFDM (DVB-T) modulator Signal-450 is converted into RF multiplex. The "local" mux is amplified by the 4-channel amplifier Terra at440 R82511 (the other 3 channels are used for the DVB-T multiplexes received by the A2670 antenna). All the four muxes are further amplified by the multiband amplifier Terra ma400 R82520 (UHF band). Additionally, the multiband amplifier is also used for distribution of FM/DAB signals. Its high gain and maximum output level of 118 dBuV allow for the distribution of all signals within the whole antenna system.
The completed project allows residents to monitor the surveillance video on every TV connected to the SMATV system, with a resolution of 1920x1080 pixels, at 25 fps. It is enough to tune in the appropriate channel and select it on the TV remote control. In the future, the connection of an e-SATA hard drive will allow for recording of the video streams and for playing them back via LAN.
Building amplifiers in MATV systems.
Building amplifiers are used in shared antenna systems to distribute antenna signals within passive networks. They compensate the attenuation of the distribution networks caused by splitters, taps, cables and antenna outlets. The amplifiers have one input and one output, and often a test output (the level of the test signal is usually decreased by 20 or 30 dB). They also have built-in power supplies and circuits compensating the differences in cable attenuation at various frequencies (slope adjustment). The maximum output level is usually 100 dBμV at least.

It is worth mentioning that the first stage of a large MATV system should be based on channel amplifiers that filter out unwanted signals and equalize levels of the received channels. A building amplifier is to be used as the second stage.
The project had to include cameras for monitoring vehicles entering and leaving the area, capable of working at night without additional lighting. The best choice has been n-cam 700 ANPR M11290 cameras designed specifically for this type of applications and ensuring resistance to overexposure typically caused by direct light from car headlights.
The Sunell IRC13/40ZMDN M11271 outdoor cameras have been intended for observation of the surroundings of the building. They have been selected due to excellent image quality (900 TVL, mechanical IR-cut filter) and high resistance to harsh weather conditions. Inside the building there have been deployed vandal-proof Sunell IRC13/40ATVD/B M10763 cameras. The video surveillance system has been additionally supported by high-speed PTZ camera PH-33 M1196 with 33x optical zoom.
The components of the CCTV system with wireless access to surveillance video
The solution has been based on the Ultimax 1408 WD1 M72408 DVR and TCO5807h M1559 wireless A/V transmission system (5.8 GHz). The wireless link transmits the video signal from the spot/main out output of the DVR. The output is programmable, e.g. it is possible to switch between the channels with a preset dwell time. The TCO5807h wireless transmission system has been designed to transmit analog audio and video signals over distances up to 2 km. The user can choose one of seven non-overlapping channels, which allows to employ up to 7 such sets in a single CCTV system.
How to build a low-cost IP CCTV system?
An economical IP video surveillance system can be based on megapixel IP cameras from Sunell. Thanks to the ability to save surveillance data on remote FTP servers (such services are offered by hosting companies), there is no need for buying and maintaining an NVR operating on 24/7 basis. The camera can be directly connected by entering login, password, IP address and port number for FTP connection, so the only additional device is a router with Internet access.

In order to ensure good image quality, each camera needs at least 1 Mbps upload bandwidth. The files saved on the FTP server can be played back on a computer running application software provided with the cameras or using a typical video player. Live monitoring is available by logging in directly to the camera from any Web browser or on a smartphone running InView application. Local wireless transmission to a laptop on site is safe thanks to the N2904 access point using WPA-/WPA2-PSK, WPA-/WPA2-AES or WEP encryption.
The recording of the surveillance data on a remote server is not only economical and convenient, but also safe. In the case of a robbery etc. the recorded data cannot be destroyed or stolen, because it is not physically on site.
How to solve compatibility problems between a TP-LINK 3G router and some 3G modems?
For a wide compatibility, TP-LINK company tests its routers with all popular 3G modems and continually updates the firmware and the list of compatible modems. Despite these efforts, there may be some items that present compatibility problems.To solve such a problem, the user can perform the following actions:
- Way 1. Due to the mentioned constant firmware updating, the user should first try to find the 3G modem on the current list of compatible devices. If the modem is on the list but the status window of the router shows information about an unrecognized device (Unknown Modem), the user should update the router firmware. The latest firmware is available at www.tp-link.com. After downloading, it can be installed by selecting System tools->Firmware Upgrade.
- Way 2. If a 3G modem has not yet been included into the latest firmware update, there is a chance that the suitable software can be found in 3G Modem Bin File Center. The suitable binary file should be downloaded onto a computer's hard drive and then loaded to the 3G router.
