The most powerful weather supercomputer will be built in the UK. Microsoft and Met Office, the UK's national weather agency, have begun a collaborative effort to create a supercomputer dedicated to predicting weather, monitoring and simulating climate changes. The British government has allocated a gigantic amount of £ 1.2 billion for the project. The new machine is to be one of the most powerful computers in the world and become a leader in weather applications. Its computing power is awe-inspiring, 60 petaflops which means it can perform 60 trillion (60*1015^) operations every second. Such a huge power will be extracted from 1.5 million AMD Epyc processor cores encased in 4 HPE Cray EX units. It is essential for accurate simulations and calculations. Greater accuracy will make it possible to predict severe weather events, such as floods, storms or heavy precipitation, more in advance and more precisely, with an accuracy of up to one kilometer, and for sensitive locations such as airports, it will be up to 300 meters. The data will be made available to other institutions and industry, such as the power system, allowing it to optimize its performance by warning, for example, of strong winds from a particular direction.
Cray XC40, the "old" supercomputer running in the Met Office has a power of 14 petaflops. The Cray XC40 supercomputer, called Okeanos, with the power of 1 petaflop, is also operated in Warsaw.
The supercomputer will also be used to track and analyze climate changes. With large storage space, on the order of exabytes, more detailed information can be collected, and more data means more accurate analysis of what changes are actually happening. The computer itself will not contribute to adverse climate change – its power supply in megawatts will be based on renewable energy.
Filtering of unwanted signals. Work is underway in the EU member states to clean up radio spectrum and make more bands available for mobile operators (5G services), also as part of the transition to DVB-T2/HEVC broadcasting. Currently, the 700 MHz TV band is being freed up. The highest TV channels, numbered 49 and 50, are most at risk of interference from LTE transmitters. The image on the TV screen may freeze, colored stripes and squares (picture frameup) may appear. To exclude the interference of LTE transmitters on DVB-T/T2 reception, special external filters were developed.

Coding of fiber optic cables according to DIN/VDE0888. The coding and interpretation of fiber optic cables is quite a challenge for installers, as well as for those involved in fiber optics business. The difficulty has to do with the complexity of cable coding (usually composed of many letters), the lack of knowledge on how to interpret specific codes, as well as the simultaneous presence of two different coding practices, i.e. the European DIN/VDE standard along with another standard used locally. In Poland, for instance, it is based on the standards of the leading cable manufacturer, Telefonika.

The standard also requires that the name should include two extra pieces of information: core and sheath diameter, as well as the fiber standard. For the cable in question, these figures would be 9/125 OS2, respectively. However, producers often leave out that data.

How to send snapshots from a camera to an FTP server? Hikvision IP cameras and DVRs allow you to save snapshots on a remote server. The images can be captured at specific time intervals (e.g. every 5 seconds), which makes it possible to use them for creating simple websites with camera views or to visualize the progress of construction work. Taking snapshots can also be initiated by an alarm event, e.g. motion detection.
The necessary information to configure saving to FTP includes:
  • IP address and port number of the FTP server providing the service,
  • user name and password,
  • directory details,
and configure recording settings according to event and alarm timing.
